Mark Harmon Biography: Thomas Mark Harmon is an actor from the United States. He is most famous for the role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs in NCIS. He has also played a variety of roles since the early 1970s.

Mark Harmon Biography: On September 2, 1951, Thomas Mark Harmon was born in Burbank, California. Tom Harmon, his father, was a Heisman Trophy-winning football player and commentator, and Elyse Knox, his mother, was an actress, model, designer, and artist. Harmon is the youngest of three siblings, the other two being the late actress Kristin Nelson and the actress and model Kelly Harmon.

He went to Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles for high school. Following graduation, he attended Pierce College, where he also played football. While there, he earned football scholarship offers from numerous extensive college football programs, but he ultimately selected UCLA over Oklahoma. After transferring to the University of California, Los Angeles, he was the starting quarterback for the Bruins in 1972 and 1973.

After graduating from college, Harmon planned a career in advertising or law and began a career as a merchandising director, but ultimately decided to pursue acting. In 1975, he debuted as an actor on programs such as “Ozzie’s Girls,” “Adam-12,” “Police Woman,” and “Emergency!” In addition, he collaborated with producer/creator Jack Webb on two projects: “905-Wild,” a failed pilot for a series, and “Sam” (1978), a short-lived series about an LAPD detective and his K-9 partner. Harmon was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for his portrayal in “Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years” (1977).

In 1980, Harmon earned a recurring role on the primetime soap opera “Flamingo Road” and gained wider recognition. When the show was canceled after two seasons in 1983, he was cast as Dr. Robert Caldwell on “St. Elsewhere.” He played Dr. Caldwell for nearly three seasons until early 1986 when he departed the show. In 1988, he starred in “Stealing Home” and “The Presidio.” However, he did not receive much recognition for his feature films. His television ventures were significantly more successful. From 1991 to 1993, Harmon returned to frequent television roles as Chicago police detective Dickie Cobb on the NBC series “Reasonable Doubts,” starring for two seasons. The following year, he starred in the ABC series “Charlie Grace” for one season, followed by the ensemble medical series “Chicago Hope” from 1996 to 2000. In May 2002, Harmon joined the cast of “The West Wing” as Secret Service agent Simon Donovan for a four-episode arc. This performance earned him his second nomination for an Emmy Award, precisely 25 years after his first nomination. Donald P.
