Thandie Newton Biography: Melanie Thandiwe Newton was born in Westminster, London, England, on November 6, 1972. Her mother was a Zimbabwean princess, and her father was an English-born lab technician. Thandiwe, her middle name, later became Newton’s stage name, meaning “beloved” in the Bantu language of the Nguni people. Newton attended a Catholic school as a child. She was rapidly shunned and made to feel like an outsider because of her color and her family’s atheism. She admits to being ordered to sit out of school photos and being humiliated for various reasons. Newton learned to dance as a young girl in London. Thandie’s film career began in 1991 with “Flirting,” she was cast in “Interview with the Vampire” in 1994. Newton and Tom Cruise would work together again much later in her career.
