Bassett, who was raised in Harlem, was quickly separated from her parents when her mother became pregnant again ten months after giving birth to her. She afterward lived with her aunt for many years. She moved again after her parents split, this time to St. Petersburg, Florida, where she was reared alongside her sister by a social worker.
Angela’s mother grew adamant that she attended college after a few years and became much more involved. She pushed both of her daughters to achieve good grades to attend university. Bassett grew interested in performing for the first time around this period, reading poems, and doing plays and music for their family.

Angela began her acting career in the mid-1980s, appearing in plays such as “Black Girl,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” & “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.” During this time, she also moved to film acting, playing a prostitute in the made-for-TV film “Doubletake.” She then made her feature film debut in 1986 with the movie “F/X.”
Bassett moved to Los Angeles near the end of the 1980s for new acting chances.
