Biography of Roopa Ganguly: Rupa Ganguly is a famous Television actress and politician. Known for her acting skills and ability to portray different characters on screen, Roopa is one of the most popular social media personalities and has millions of followers from around the country. Roopa got fame from BR Chopra’s famous television series, Mahabharat in which she played the role of Draupadi, the wife of Pandavas. Roopa has also been a political activist and elected member of parliament, Rajya Sabha by the president in 2016.

Roopa Ganguly Family & Personal Life:

Born on 25 November 1966 in Kolkata, West Bengal, Roopa is the daughter of Samarendra Lal Ganguly and Juthika Ganguly. As a child, Roopa lived in a joint family in Calcutta (present day Kolkata) and completed her education from a local school of Calcutta. Roopa revealed that she had to suffer a lot during her college days and she joined politics in 2015 as the member of Bharatiya Janata Party of West Bengal.

As of now, Roopa Ganguly is a divorced single mother of son, Aakash Mukherjee. She tied the knot with Dhrubo Mukherjee, a mechanical engineer from West Bengal in 1992 and later they got separated in 2007 due to her extra marital affair and live in relationship with Bengali singer Dibyendu Mukherjee.

Schooling & Education:

Roopa Ganguly completed her matriculation (10th class) from Beltala Girls’ High School after which she went to Jodhpur Park Girls’ High School to complete her higher secondary education (12th class). Ganguli completed her graduation from Jogamaya Devi College, University of Calcutta. It is an undergraduate Women’s College located in Kolkata, West Bengal. It is known that Roopa had to face a lot of financial trouble during her college days which made her independent and courageous.

As a child, Roopa Ganguly never thought of becoming an actress. However she was suggested to do acting by some of her relatives and introduced to Bijoy Chatterjee during a wedding ceremony. Bijoy was looking for a new and young face to cast in his short film, Nirupama. Initially Roopa hesitated and denied the offer but later on she accepted it on insistence by her aunt Soumitra Chatterjee. The film came out in 1986 and became the first debut of Roopa on Indian Television. The film was loved by the public and after that Roopa got many such offers to work in hit Bengali pictures and TV dramas.

After working in many regional movies and Bengali TV series Rupa got an offer from BR Chopra. He was quite impressed by Roopa’s performance in the television series Ganadevta and decided to cast her in his TV series Mahabharat. Roopa appeared for the audition and was selected by Chopra for the lead role of Draupadi. After that Ganguly worked in many hit movies including  K. Bapayya’s Pyar Ka Devta (1991), Raj Sippy’s Saugandh (1991), Tulsi Ramsay’s Kannada film Police Matthu Dada (1991) and Rajkumar Kohli’s Virodhi (1992)

In 1992, Ganguly appeared in a Bengali film directed by Goutam Ghose. This award winning movie was Padma Nadir Majhi where she portrayed the role of Kapila, a woman from the fisherman community and her love story with her sister’s husband.

After this Rupa appeared in many award winning movies including Yugant (1996), Bariwali (2000), Dekha (2001), Antarmahal (2005) and Krantikaal (2005). Her role in the Hindi Bollywood films ‘Agle Janam Mohe Beta Hi Kijo’ (2009) and ‘Barfi’ (2012) was really appreciated by makers and fans throughout the country.

In 2015, Roopa Ganguly joined Bharatiya Janata Party as a member and quit her career in acting as she believed that a political figure should not be a Television personality who already rules the heart of many people through her accent and acting.

Rupa contested the election for West Bengal assembly in 2016 in which she lost from Howrah North to Trinamool Congress counterpart and cricketer Laxmi Ratan Shukla. Later in 2016, Roopa was attacked by Trinamool Congress workers while she was on her way to home. It is known that Roopa at that time was returning from Kakdwip in South 24 Parganas where she had gone to meet the victims of political violence. In this incident, Roopa got injured badly and had to get admitted to the hospital.

In October 2016, Roopa got elected as the Member of Parliament by the president Pranab Mukherjee. Prior to that, Roopa also got elected as the president of BJP Mahila Morcha of West Bengal. She has also served as the general secretary and President of the West Bengal Motion Picture Artists’ Forum.

Later it was discovered that Roopa was in a secret live-in relationship with a Bengali singer, Dibyendu Mukherjee. Roopa and Dibyendu spent time at Roopa’s flat in Mumbai, in the absence of her husband. Due to this reason, Rupa and her husband Dhrubo Mukherjee got separated in 2007. However, Roopa always maintained a formality while meeting and addressing Mukherjee in public forums and interviews.

During the shooting of the bengali series, Meyebela, Roopa quitted the show suddenly after just three months of the launch claiming that the show has taken a different turn towards a regressive content which was not briefed to her earlier. For this a team member has posted on social media that Roopa and other actors were already aware of the story and she is quitting the show on a selfish note without thinking about the team.

 In July, 2017 Roopa shared her opinion on the safety of girls in Bengal and said:

“Send their (Trinamool workers) wives and daughters to Bengal… If they are able to survive there for 15 days without getting raped, then tell me.” This statement by Rupa Ganguly was criticised on social media and an FIR was filed against her.

Roopa Ganguly once said in the Parliament that:

“The Mumbai film industry kills people, makes them drug addicts, and keeps insulting women, but nobody is doing anything. Mumbai Police remains silent. It does not take action.” She further opened up about the Anurag Kashyap and Payal Ghosh relationship and her statements went viral on social media due to which she became the centre of a controversial talk on social media.
