Bo Derek Biography: Mary Cathleen Collins gave birth to Bo Derek on November 20, 1956, in Long Beach, California. She was raised by her mother, Norma (a hairdresser and makeup artist), father Paul (a Hobie Cat executive), two junior sisters, and one younger brother. After her divorce in 1969, Norma wed stuntman Bobby Bass. Collins attended George S. Patton Continuation School and Narbonne High School in Harbor City, California, but dragged out at age 16 to film a movie with John Derek in Greece (“Fantasies,” which was not released until 1981). She fell in love with John, who was 30 years her senior and married to actress Linda Evans, & they moved to Germany to evade U.S. statutory rape laws. They returned to the United States when Collins was 18, and she adopted Bo Derek upon marrying John in 1976.

On June 10, 1976, Bo married John Derek, and the couple stayed together until John died of heart disease in May 1998. Bo was the stepmother to John’s children, Russell and Sean, who were born before she was. Although “Fantasies” was Derek’s first film, her first film to be released was “Orca” in 1977. She reportedly beat out Melanie Griffith, Kim Basinger, and Christie Brinkley to land the role of Jenny Hanley in Blake Edwards’ 1979 film “10.” In the film, Bo co-starred alongside Dudley Moore and Julie Andrews and was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance.
