He was born on 9 January 1974 in Mumbai, he was born in an Urdu poetry family, and his grandfather was a good poet and writer who took lessons from his great grandfather Muztar Khairabadi.
Farhan completed his schooling from Mumbai, but due to lack of attendance in the second year, he could not complete his college degree, after which he dropped out.

He wrote his first film Dil Chahta Hai in 2001, which was acclaimed by the audience and critics and Farhan even visited Sydney to shoot the film.
He also served as one of the nine judges in the Femina Miss India beauty pageant in 2002 and his interest in models went on and has also been a judge on the dance reality show Nach Baliye.
In 2006, Farhan directed the remake film Don starring Shah Rukh Khan which was a box-office hit that year.
