Gillian Anderson Biography: Gillian Anderson was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 9, 1968. Edward Anderson, her father, ran a film post-production company. Her parents moved to Puerto Rico for 15 months before moving to London for her father to attend the London Film School. She grew up in Crouch End, north London, and attended Coleridge Primary School. When her family returned to the United States, she was 11 years old, and they settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan. They kept a flat in London and spent their summers there.
Anderson went through a rebellious phase as a teen following their return to the United States (petty thievery, dating a much older boyfriend, and more) and was placed in therapy at the age of 14. Anderson attended The Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago after graduating high school and got a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1990. She attended Cornell University for the summer program of the National Theatre of Great Britain. She worked at the Goose Island Brewpub in Chicago to help pay for her education. She is bidialectal; as a teenager, she struggled to fit in in the Midwest due to her English accent, and growing up, she acquired a Midwestern accent to blend in. She can still switch between her American and English accents easily.
