She struggled with many health issues as a child, including congenital hearing loss and coeliac disease. Jamil was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa as a teenager & suffered broken bones after being struck by a vehicle at the age of 17. She believes the tragedy helped her recover from anorexia. Jamil taught English to international students for two years at the Callan School of English in London despite having yet to complete her formal education. In 2008, she was accosted in a bar by a producer who offered her an audition to become a television presenter. She later appeared on the British channel E4 before securing a position hosting a youth program on Channel 4. In 2010, she hosted the online fashion advice program “The Closet” and began DJing at events. Subsequently, Jamil wrote a column for the women’s magazine Company from 2011 to 2014. During this period, she also began hosting the reality television program “Playing it Straight,” as well as the BBC Radio 1 programs “The Official Chart” and “The Official Chart Update.” This made Jamil the first woman to ever host the music chart program on BBC Radio 1 by herself.
Jamil relocated to Los Angeles, California, in 2016 in search of a career as a screenwriter. While employed at 3 Arts Entertainment, her agents informed her that television producer Michael Schur sought a British actress to star in his coming comedy series “The Good Place.” Jamil attended the audition and won the part of Tahani Al-Jamil, an affluent, deceased philanthropist and model with an affinity for name-dropping. She remained on the acclaimed program for all four seasons through 2020.
Jamil kept an announcer throughout her time on “The Good Place.” In 2018, she hosted a recurring segment on the late-night series “Last Call with Carson Daly,” In 2019, she became the host of the TBS game program “The Misery Index.” In 2020, Jamil began serving as a jury on the HBO Max reality competition series “Legendary.”
Jamil has also provided her voice for some animated programs, including “DuckTales,” “Robot Chicken,” “American Dad!,” “Big City Greens,” “Crossing Swords,” “Harley Quinn,” and “Animaniacs.” In addition, she has voiced recurring characters in the animated series “Mira, Royal Detective,” “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous,” and “Star Trek: Prodigy.” Tatiana Maslany co-stars as the titular green savior in the Disney+ series “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” in which Jamil portrays the supervillainess Titania.
