Portia de Rossi Biography: Portia Lee James DeGeneres, better known as Portia de Rossi, was born Amanda Lee Rogers on January 31, 1973, in Horsham, Victoria, Australia. Margaret, her mother, worked as a medical receptionist. Unfortunately, her father, Barry Rogers, died when she was nine. De Rossi grew up in Grovedale, Victoria, and as a child, she often modeled for print and television advertising. She took the stage name Portia de Rossi at age fifteen after being inspired by the character Portia in William Shakespeare’s play “The Merchant of Venice.” She went to Geelong Grammar School and then the University of Melbourne, where she studied law.

De Rossi got her first significant on-screen role in 1994, portraying a young model in “Sirens” (1994), an Australian film. After relocating to Los Angeles, California, she began winning guest roles on various television programs. A permanent role in the sitcom “Nick Freno: Licensed Teacher” helped her gain a larger audience, which led to a part in the 1997 film “Scream 2.” In 1998, de Rossi joined the “Ally McBeal” team as a regular cast member. Her role as attorney Nelle Porter increased her international recognition, and she remained with the program until its conclusion in 2002.
De Rossi appeared alongside Christian Slater, Rupaul, and Tim Allen in the 2001 film “Who Is Cletis Tout?” Then, she portrayed Lindsay Bluth Fünke on the Fox television series “Arrested Development” from 2003 to 2006. She would reprise this role on the Netflix revival of the program in 2013 and again between 2018 and 2019. Elizabeth North joined the cast of “Scandal” in the fourth season as a recurring character, was elevated to a series regular in the fifth season, and then was killed off the show in the sixth season.
