He made a living by writing short tales and poetry for newspapers and publications. “Sometimes I got lucky, and some [work] got selected, and I earned a few hundred rupees,” he recalled of his youth. I was in my 20s and had no obligations, so I was glad to be doing what I liked.” He moved to Mussoorie in 1963 because, aside from loving the region, it was near the editors and publishers in Delhi. For four years, he was the editor of a magazine. Penguin opened a shop in India in the 1980s and approached him about writing some novels.
In 1956, he wrote Vagrants in the Valley as a companion to The Room on the Roof. Penguin India released these two works in one volume in 1993. The following year, Penguin India released The Best of Ruskin Bond, a compilation of his nonfiction publications. Because of his passion for spooky literature, he wrote popular titles such as Ghost Stories from the Raj, A Season of Ghosts, A Face in the Dark, and Other Hauntings.
Since then, he has authored over 500 short stories, essays, novels, The Blue Umbrella, Funny Side Up, A Flight of Pigeons (based on which the Hindi film Junoon was based), and over 50 books for children. Scenes from a Writer’s Life, his autobiography, chronicles his early years growing up in Anglo-India, and Lone Fox Dancing, his second autobiography, was released in 2017. The Lamp Is Lit is a compilation of his articles and journal entries.
Since 1963, he has worked as a freelance writer in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, where he resides with his adopted family at Landour, Mussoorie’s Ivy Cottage, which he has called home since 1980. When asked what he enjoys most about his life, he said, “Being able to write for so long.” I began writing when I was 17 or 18 and am still writing.
