Career
Gaikwad joined the Vairok Dilip Vengsarkar Academy of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) in Thergaon, Pimpri Chinchwad, Pune at the age of 13.
In the 2010 Cadence Trophy, he scored 63* (71) for Vairoc Vengsarkar Academy against MIG Cricket Club, Mumbai, earning him man of the match. His academy defeated MIG Cricket Club by 7 wickets at the Cadence Cricket Ground.
In the 2015 Maharashtra Invitation Tournament, he scored 306 runs in a match with his partner Vinay in a partnership of 522 runs.
Debut for Maharashtra
He made his first-class debut for Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy on 6 October 2016. In the 2019 Ranji Trophy season, he scored 108 (199) in the first innings and 76 (170) in the second innings while opening for the Maharashtra cricket team vs Chhattisgarh in Pune. He became the man of the match in this match. He made his List A debut for Maharashtra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. In this tournament, he scored 444 runs in 7 matches at an average of 63.42. He scored 3 half-centuries and one century.He was the third highest run scorer in the 2016–17 Vijay Hazare Trophy.
In December 2018, he was named in India’s squad for the 2018 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup.
He scored four centuries in four matches in the 2019 Mandke Trophy.
He scored 187 not out for India A against Sri Lanka A in June 2019. He was named in the India Blue team’s squad for the Duleep Trophy. Gaikwad captained Maharashtra in the 2021 Mushtaq Ali Trophy and scored 259 runs in five matches at an average of 51.80, including three fifties at a strike rate of 150.71. He was one of the top scorers in the tournament. In the 2021–22 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he scored four centuries and equaled Virat Kohli’s record for most centuries in a single Vijay Hazare tournament and scored more than 600 runs in the tournament for Maharashtra.
In November 2022, during the second quarter-final match of the 2022–23 Vijay Hazare Trophy between Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, Gaikwad became the first batsman to hit seven sixes (one on a no-ball) in an over in all formats of cricket. With an innings of 108 runs against Saurashtra (in the final of Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022–23), Gaikwad now holds the record for most centuries by any player in the history of Vijay Hazare Trophy. Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa and Gaikwad’s current Maharashtra teammate Ankit Bawne had previously jointly held the record (11 centuries each).
