On January 17, 1971, DeVito met actress Rhea Perlman when she went to see a friend perform in the play “The Shrinking Bride,” which DeVito was also in. The couple had moved in together two weeks later. On January 28, 1982, they married. They have three children together. He attended boarding school and graduated in 1962 from Oratory Preparatory School in Summit, New Jersey. He began acting in high school, appearing in student plays of “St. Francis of Assisi” and “The Billion Dollar Saint.” He began working at his sister’s salon after graduating high school, thinking it would be an excellent way to meet girls. After working there for 18 months, he chose to go after a more lucrative career in cosmetics. As a result, he applied to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, where he was forced to deliver a monologue. Following the excellent response to his monologue, he quickly shifted to studying acting at the school instead and graduated in 1966. DeVito began acting in the Colonnades Theater Lab at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Connecticut. He also appeared in Westbeth Playwrights’ Feminist Collective productions.
