Her mother is Irish-American, and her father, who died when she was nine years old, was African-American. Bobby and Gregory Beals are Beals’ two brothers. She went to Francis W. Parker School and participated in a production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” She attended the Goodman Theatre’s Young People’s Drama Workshop after graduation. Beals moved to Yale University, earning a BA in American literature in 1987.

They have a daughter together and two children from Dixon’s previous marriage. Beals considers herself spiritual and is a Buddhist follower. Beals debuted in a feature film in 1980 with a small part in “My Bodyguard.” Three years later, in “Flashdance,” she had her breakthrough role as aspiring professional dancer Alex Owens. Beals received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical for her performance.
