Kanhaiya Kumar Biography: An Indian politician named Kanhaiya Kumar is from the INC party. Since 2021, he has served as the President of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union and also as the leader of the AISF.

Kanhaiya Kumar was not a very popular personality as a president of the JNU Students Union. He got ill fame in 2014 because of an incident where he was accused of provoking the crowd by shouting anti-national slogans. He was charged with sedition for protesting the hanging of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru following the complaints by Bharatiya Janata Party member of parliament Mahesh Girri and the ABVP in 2016. He also got the tag of a terrorist for expressing his views on an event that he did not particularly start. In 2018, he was inducted into the CPI and contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Begusarai in Bihar with a CPI ticket. He lost to Giriraj Singh of the BJP in the elections. Later on, on October 2nd, 2021, Kanhaiya Kumar joined the Indian National Congress party.

Controversies

On the charge of sedition and criminal conspiracy on February 12, 2016, Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested with the other two students. A video had emerged on the national news channels, which showed Kanhaiya Kumar and other JNU students raising anti-national slogans at an event on the campus of JNU. This video led to their arrest. The video also showed that they opposed the government’s decision on capital punishment for the terrorist, Afzal Guru.
On February 15, 2016, when Kanhaiya Kumar was being taken to the Patiala House Court by the police for his hearing, he was abused and beaten up by a group of lawyers inside the court premises. During initial investigations it was thought that the attack was random, but later on it was revealed that the attack was planned.
After Kanhaiya Kumar was released from jail, he received a number of death threats from lawyers and politicians. Kanhaiya reported all these threats to the police.
On March 10, 2016, Kanhaiya was beaten up by a man from Ghaziabad who accused him of being a deshdrohi.
