Lisa Bonet was already involved in the entertainment industry as a child before she attended acting school following high school. As a young actress, she frequently appeared in guest roles on numerous television programs and competed in numerous beauty pageants. In 1983 one of her first significant TV appearances was on St. Elsewhere. She followed this guest appearance in 1984 with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity by obtaining a recurring role on The Cosby Show.
Lisa Bonet portrayed Bill Cosby’s fictional daughter throughout the program except for the eighth and final season. Five years in a run, The Cosby Show had the highest ratings on television. In addition, the program won six Emmy Awards during its run. However, only some things were always rosy behind the scenes. According to multiple reports, Lisa Bonet and Bill Cosby did not get along, particularly as Bonet aged.
Eventually, this forced Bonet to temporarily depart the program to star in the spin-off series A Different World. From 1987 to 1989, she appeared in 23 episodes of the program. Later, it was revealed that Bonet was “strongly encouraged” to depart The Cosby Show for A Different World.
When she departed The Cosby Show, she also appeared alongside Mickey Rourke in the film Angel Heart. After fans noticed her in an explicit scene with Rourke, the 19-year-old actress generated considerable buzz. This eventually led to a topless photoshoot for the magazine Interview. Bonet returned to The Cosby Show after a break due to her pregnancy with Zoe Kravitz but was dismissed after one season due to “creative differences” with Bill Cosby.
Lisa Bonet followed The Cosby Show with Why Bother Voting? In 1992. The program focused on the attitudes of young voters toward voting. Lisa Bonet earned supporting roles in films such as Enemy of the State and High Fidelity toward the end of the 1990s. Lisa Bonet appeared in films such as Biker Boyz and Whitepaddy after 2000. In addition, she got recurring roles on the television series Life on Mars and The Red Road. On the set of the latter program, she met Jason Momoa, her future husband.
