Her mother is of Italian ethnicity, and her father is Jewish. Reed has a younger half-brother, Joey, and an older brother, Nathan. Her mother raised Reed after her parents divorced when she was two. She moved out at the age of 14 and began living on her own in apartments in the Los Angeles region. Reed attended Alexander Hamilton High School on an only basis while balancing her acting career. Reed met singer-songwriter and former “American Idol” finalist Paul McDonald during the red carpet premiere of the film “Red Riding Hood” in 2011. They started dating and soon after moved in together. They got engaged later that year and married in Malibu in October. Reed had her breakthrough role as a teenager in the 2003 film “Thirteen,” she co-starred with Evan Rachel Wood as a troubled junior high school student involved in substance abuse, crime, and sexual activity with minors. In addition to starring in the film, Reed co-wrote the screenplay with director Catherine Hardwicke, a friend of Reed’s mother; they completed the script in just six days. Reed’s performance earned her multiple nominations for critics’ awards and the Independent Spirit Award for Outstanding Debut Performance.
Following “Thirteen,” Reed appeared in “Man of God,” Catherine Hardwicke’s skateboarding drama “Lords of Dogtown,” and “American Gun,” starring Donald Sutherland, Forest Whitaker, and Marcia Gay Hardaker. In early 2006, she had a recurring role on “The O.C.” as the new love interest of Ben McKenzie’s Ryan Atwood.
