Her father, Donald Hannah, was of Scottish and Irish descent and worked for a tugboat and barge company. Her parents had Daryl and a second daughter, Page, but eventually divorced. Her mother later wed Jerold Wexler in 1969. Wexler was a prosperous commercial real estate financier, and his brother Haskell was a renowned cinematographer, film director, and producer. Hannah was reared as a Roman Catholic in a Chicago suburb with her younger sister Page and stepbrothers Don and Tanya Wexler.
She defined her childhood as lonely and her adolescence marked by emotional instability. She would retain her childhood shyness despite her career in the public eye. Her breakthrough role was in the 1982 film Blade Runner. Alongside Harrison Ford and Sean Young, she plays the character of Pris, the replicant android who aspires to be human. Hannah was involved in a mild accident on set when she crashed into a parked car. The actress strolled away with a minor elbow injury but was otherwise healthy.
