Swami Vivekananda Lecture at World Parliament
While traveling, he learned of the World Parliament of Religions, which took place in Chicago, America, in 1893. He was excited to attend the meeting to promote India, Hinduism, and his Guru Sri Ramakrishna’s teachings. He received confirmation of his wishes while thinking on the cliffs of Kanyakumari, India’s southernmost tip.
Vivekananda, Raja of Khetri, and Ajit Singh left Bombay for Chicago on May 31, 1893, after money was contributed by his devotees in Madras (now Chennai). He faced insurmountable obstacles in Chicago, but his zeal never faltered. On September 11, 1893, he approached the podium and stunned everyone by saying, “My brothers and sisters of America.” The audience gave him a standing ovation for the first line. He explained Vedanta’s intellectual roots and spiritual significance, putting Hinduism on the map of major international faiths.
He stayed in the United States for the next 2.5 years, establishing the Vedanta Society of New York in 1894. He also visited the United Kingdom to impart Hindu Spiritualism and Vedanta teachings to the Western world.
Founding of Ramakrishna Math
After Ramakrishna’s death, his fans and admirers ceased to assist his students. Unpaid rent accrued, and Narendra and the other followers were forced to relocate. Many people went home, embracing a Grihastha (family-oriented) lifestyle. Narendra decided to turn a run-down house in Baranagar into a new math (monastery) for the surviving disciples.
The rent for the Baranagar Math was minimal because it was raised by “holy begging” (modular). The Ramakrishna Math’s initial structure was the monastery of the Ramakrishna monastic order. Narendra and his pupils spent several hours practicing meditation and religious austerities daily. Narendra subsequently reflected on the monastery’s early days.
